On Thursday 27th February Juergen Teller was announced as the winner of the £20,000 Citybank Photography prize 2003. The three other finalists Bertien van Manen, Jitka Hanzlová and Simon Norfolk also received cheques for £2,000.
They all use photography to record the world around them and their work signals a return to a more documentary approach that is now in ascendance in contemporary photography.
Among the work of the finalists, there are portrayals of different communities in Britain and China (Hanzlová, Manen), a harrowing study of the landscape of war in Afghanistan (Norfolk), and a new take on fashion photography combinend with family portraiture (Teller).
The Citybank Prize 2003 will be touring to the Museum Kunst Palast, Dûsseldorf, 29 march - 9 June 2003 and to Madrid for the Photo Espana Festival, 20 June - 27 July 2003.
